Soquel Elementary Turf Removal Project

This project was done as part of a public workshop on sheet mulching as a turf-removal technique. Nine-thousand square feet of thirsty, weed-infested dead grass previously carpeted the front of this historic building which has occupied this site since the 1890s. New design included pathways meandering between the colorful, drought-tolerant plant selections, and a special "parent waiting area" with large boulders for seating. Plants were chosen specifically to encourage hummingbirds and wildlife and to serve as a demonstration garden to give others ideas for their gardens.
